We can do the tango just for two…

We changed our first dance song.

Yes, yes we did. Oh, didn’t you know that it was good to make big changes a month before the wedding? Well it is.

If you remember, our original first dance song choice was Ingrid’s “The Way I Am.”

It is no less sweet, no less perfect, and no less of an amazing song. We just realized we had a better choice right under our noses. “ORLY?” you ask? “LET ME SEE!” you say? Hokay.

The song that bumped Ingrid from the top spot is “Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy” by Queen.

Why this change?

  1. Um, it’s Queen. JP and I both have a serious love for Queen. Serious. Freddie makes me die.
  2. This song is one we actually listen to. I’m not gonna lie– “The Way I Am” isn’t on our big playlist of life. It’s a great song, great lyrics, etc., but we don’t rock out in the car to it. GOFLB? We do. I turn my fist into a microphone and JP rocks out on the air guitar.
  3. It’s a fun song, lesser-known but (in my opinion) instantly lovable.
  4. Queen. Freddie Mercury. Ok, moving on. Point made.
  5. The lyrics? Get out adorable.

There’s a great beginning…

I can dim the lights and sing you songs full of sad things
We can do the tango just for two
I can serenade and gently play on your heart strings
Be your Valentino just for you

Ooh love- ooh lover boy
What’re you doin’ tonight, hey boy?
Set my alarm, turn on my charm
That’s because I’m a good old-fashioned lover boy

Or how about a mushy middle…

When I’m not with you
I think of you always
(I miss those long hot summer nights)
I miss you
When I’m not with you
Think of me always
Love you- love you

And a strong end…

Ooh love
(There he goes again just like a good old-fashioned lover boy)
Ooh lover boy
What’re you doin’ tonight, hey boy?
Everything’s all right
Just hold on tight
That’s because I’m a good old-fashioned fashioned lover boy

Wonderful.
Thankfully MOH Laura is a rock-star dancer, and will teach us how not to fall all over ourselves trying to boogie to this. It’s not exactly a stand-there-and-sway song, so wezagunnahaffta practice. We’re lucky that it’s a fairly short song.

Did you change your first dance song, or were you solid from the beginning? Those who are doing “faster” songs, how are you handling the dance routine?

I’ll try not to step on your toes.

Neither JP nor I are very dancily-inclined. We’re both pretty awkward people, to be perfectly honest. I forget how long my limbs are. JP has big feet. I have tiny feet. I giggle or act like a fool when I’m nervous. I think our idea of dancing is jumping up and down. We’re really good at that. JP can totally rock the Nathaniel Dance. Regular dancing? We’re not so good at that.

I took ballroom dancing in middle-school. The only thing I remember about it is always being paired with the shortest dude and how to do the boxy dance move doo-dad.

I’m not sure how JP and I will handle our first dance as far as “moves” go. Maybe we’ll just wing it? Sounds about like us. We do, however, have a pretty good idea of what we want our first dance song to be– “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. It’s a sweet song, but also sort-of fits in with our omnipresent “We’re going to be who we are, damnit” theme. Life and love are not always ponies and rainbows, but we’ll always be there to back each other up.

Without further ado, here’s the song if you haven’t heard it. (And yes, it was on that Old Navy sweater commercial. Leave me alone).

And here be the lyrics…

The Way I Am

If you were falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I’d find a match.

‘Cause I love the way you say good morning.
And you take me the way I am.

If you are chilly, here take my sweater.
Your head is aching, I’ll make it better.

‘Cause I love the way you call me baby.
And you take me the way I am.

I’d buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair.
Sew on patches to all your tears.

‘Cause I love you more than I could ever promise.
And you take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.

A little less cheese-tastic than most first dance songs, but with just as much sweetness and meaning. (Even though I doubt JP’s insanely thick hair will ever need Rogaine. Maybe we should replace that with Just for Men Gel).

JP, if you try not to step on my dress, I’ll try not to step on your toes.
