It’s time to show you all my…

Interestingly enough, one of the things that I did not give a flying flip about in the beginning of wedding planning was flowers. I had no desire for massive amounts of flowers– nothing over the top, no girly stuff, nothing of the sort. No pink was to come anywhere near the wedding. During this minimalist phase of early wedding planning, I loved the idea of having billy buttons and low potted plants. After a few months of wedding research and idea-sponging, I began to have second thoughts. Maybe I did want flowers. Maybe these weren’t such a bad idea. A few couldn’t hurt, right?

Then enter Amy Osaba and The Free Wedding. Ich bin game over gegangen. [Sidebar: "I went game over." This is what JP used to say as a kid when he lost a video game. He didn't know what game over literally meant, but he knew it was all finished. Ok, sidebar finished.] I have a serious, major, epic, colossal crush on her floral designs.

Just LOOK at these gorgeous flowers. Want, need, must have.

The color, the variety, the styling, the EVERYTHING. It just sets my heart aflutter, and was one of the final deciding straws in choosing to have a colorful wedding. Screw my phobia of pink in our wedding, because this is some pink that I can deal with. This stuff is PERFECT.

Oh wait, maybe not. While I adore Amy’s work, we weren’t really sure how the logistics of booking a florist that was 70 miles away would work. However, I soon found out that Terry Dunn, a local landscape architect and florist whose work I have admired for years, was available and asked to be able to do the flowers for the wedding. We met, I went over my massive amount of inspiration shots, and thankfully he was totally on board with what we wanted flower-wise.

So, signed, sealed, and delivered– he’s ours. Also, he’ll be doing the landscaping for the house as well. I’m excited that the same person will be doing both the landscaping and the wedding-day flowers.

Now comes the task of taking all of these wonderful flowers and narrowing it down to what we actually want! With that being said, let me unleash a barrage of the rest of my (very pared down) flower loves…

Adventures in Color-Picking

I don’t think it comes as a surprise to any of you that I LOVE COLOR. Love it, love to attack it, smush it, roll it around with hugs. This undying love for color has made wedding planning a wee bit difficult, because I’ve realized that I need some sort of basic palette. I can’t just say “I want every color possible” and expect to keep my sanity.

That is why I developed this little project to help! I like to call it…

Why? Because I like how it sounds, and it was totally and completely 100% free. Hah, take that world! You can have your color, and play with it too.

STEP 1: Go to your favorite big box. Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Walmart. I chose Home Depot.

{ source, source, source }

STEP 2: Nonchalantly go over to the paint chip section.

STEP 3: GO APE-SHIT.

Get all of the colors that you think you might want or need for your color-palette-testing extravaganza. I was with JP on this adventure, and we were planning to pretend that we were picking out paint colors for our “new house” if anyone asked. No one gave three toots what we were doing. Paint chips are 100% free.

STEP 4: Leave whatever big box you’re in, wave to the check-out ladies, “Bye! Thanks!” and go on your merry way.

STEP 5: Return home and assess your bounty.

Pretty sweet spread, no? I was as giddy as a schoolgirl at that point.

STEP 6: Gather your supplies.

I just used things I already had around.

  1. PAINT CHIPS
  2. Olfa box cutter (I prefer Olfa boxcutters to X-acto knives. I get more precision results with said box-cutters. My professors were always stunned by this. Plus, it makes me feel like a BAMF).
  3. Scale (You can just use a ruler. I only have scales around the apartment. My giant metal rulers were AWOL, aka I left them at my studio. Anyway, I digress).
  4. 6H Pencil (You can use the hardest-lead pencil you have. I used 6H because it would produce the least amount of graphite dust, and it is very light. If all you have is standard 2B, no big).
  5. Scissors (HA!)
  6. Handy-dandy cutting mat (If you don’t have this, you can just use a piece of cardboard, chipboard, or an old magazine).

In truth, you can use just scissors. I just like to be all weird about what tools I use.

STEP 7: Proceed to cut down all of your paint chips to the same size.

Choose a size that minimizes the amount of wording on the front. I messed up a few, so the paint names are still on there, but it’s slight. Measure and draw and cut ON THE BACK of the paint chips, not the front. That way if your lines aren’t totally correct, the fronts won’t be boogered up. The reason you’re doing this step is so that you don’t get biased or confused because some colors are larger than others. Trust me, it will happen. (Or at least it does for me!)

STEP 8: After they’re all the same size, move to a different location and assess your spread. Bring along some white paper or poster-board if your surface isn’t white.

  1. Fabric swatches
  2. Lovely paint chips that are all beautified
  3. Plain paper

Oooh, pretty. (That is  glue on my table, btw. Not food or gross stuff. I swear).

STEP 9: Lay out your colors on the white paper and PLAY!!!

Let your fabric swatches play too.

Mmmm, grays!

Play until your little heart is content.

You’re finished! Or at least with the work part. I just stack mine up when I’m done and stick them in a clear zippy bag. Once you have YOUR COLORS, I strongly suggest you take those guys and attach them to your planning folder, binder, kitchen-wall, any-and-everywhere.

Who else is a paint-chip lover? Have they helped you in organizing your color thoughts?

Let the quarter-life crisis begin!

Today is my birthday. Today I am…

Untitled-1I really can’t believe I’m 25. Seriously. I should be a grown-up by now, but I’m not.

While I’m 25, I will..

  1. Graduate with an art degree
  2. Get married
  3. Move
  4. God knows what else

Wish me luck for this Golden Birthday. (For those of you don’t know, your Golden Birthday is when your age matches your date. I was born on 1/25/85, ergo my golden birthday is my 25th). I still have pneumonia, which sucks as far as birthday conditions go, but I’m still going to a fabulous dinner tonight with my parents and JP at Sotto Sotto.

As far as birthday presents are concerned, I know JP has bought me Adobe Lightroom 2, but I have no earthly idea what I have coming from my parents. We shall see!

Anyway, that’s what’s up today. I’m also working on a new flower post, as well as a giant color post and a nailed-down theme one. Be excited.

Holy shit, it’s in.

A detail that I left out when writing about my experiences shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses is one that, well, totally and most definitely deserves its own spotlight. After visiting Bella Bridesmaid, we decided to swing by Bridals by Lori to a: look at their selection of dresses and b: check to see if my dress was in. I didn’t have very high hopes with respect to my dress being in, and actually debated even going to Bridals by Lori.

Opening up a whole ‘nother can of worms

I was just about to hang up the towel for the day when I found this dress by Vera Wang, and was totally and completely floored.

woliviasource

What is this? A long dress? From someone who so forcefully said “Ick, no long dresses at all. I’m not that mean,” just a year ago, if not a month ago? Yes. You see, I’d been pining over the Vera Wang dress for months, even prior to finding my dress, but wrote it off as being “too mean.” First of all, it was long, and I figured that it would be way out of the price range that I was willing to suggest. Vera Wang? C’mon, there’s no way that this dress would be able to work, right?

Play ‘em off, Keyboard Cat

I’ve been stalling on this whole “finding the bridesmaids a dress” thing. We know that I sort of fell in like/love with some J. Crew bridesmaids’ dresses, but sadly, those are not meant to be. There was a chance that those dresses would not fit my darling ladies to the best of their abilities, so I scratched the J.Crew dresses off the list.

closebutnocigar2Rather than continuing to obsess over dresses online, I decided [and by I decided, I mean "thankfully was harassed"] into making an appointment with a local shop to look at dresses in person. With an appointment scheduled, off I went to Bella Bridesmaid to check out dresses with my trusty mother and June, one of my awesome bridesmaids.

The Dress: Rainbows and Kittens

Let’s pick up where we last left off in my dress adventure.

I thought I had found a wonderful dress, but then I decided to take another spin around the showroom, just in case…

More ring shots, plus a slight teaser.

I have some pretty exciting news to share quite soon, but it will have to wait a little bit, because I don’t want to spoil the surprise! (Ok, it’s not news or a surprise, but my dress came in, and I have pictures… of me in it! More on that later!)

Until then, some lovely ring shots I took yesterday. I really need to get out and photograph more, but I’ve just been so busy. Everything that this camera puts out is like butta’. I want to make little camera babies with it. Mmmf.

Until next time, my dears!
