Finding my spirit animal.

“JP, what’s your spirit animal?”

“Uhhg, what are we talking about?”

“Your spirit animal. You know, like, your… spirit animal.”

“Um, a cat?”

“Not manly enough. Plus, you call me Maus, so then our possible spirit animals would be mortal enemies.”

“A wolf?”

“No, you can’t be a wolf either. That’s a dog.”

“Ok, well, then what’s your spirit animal?”

“A cat? No, I’m too tall to be a cat, or maybe I’m a… Oh you could be a robot, no wait that’s not an animal…”

Something that I’ve had an issue with since the beginning of wedding planning is the abundance of FREAKING ADORABLE wedding cake toppers. There are all of these super-cute animals, from birds, to alligators, to giraffes, to, well, pretty much anything.

I shall begin with the lovelies made by Etsy seller Bunny with a Toolbelt.

Even though I said that cats were too girly, those cats are just too adorable not to show. I love them, but I’m not sure if my spirit animal is that adorable of a cat. I think I’m maybe more of a Ratatat Wildcat. I love the gators, but my mother has an unhealthy obsession with the University of Florida, where both she and my father got their doctorates, but I don’t think we’ll bring those guys into our wedding. Sorry, Mom. Those giraffes are super cute, and even though we’re tall, I feel like giraffes are sort of dainty. I think, as awkward as I may be, that my spirit animal has a little more hulk smash in it.

Moving along.
Here are the ever-famous Goose Grease cake toppers…
goosegrease

Yes, I know they aren’t animals. But HUMANS IS ANIMALS TOO. These toppers have been seen everywhere, and part of me screams, “NO DON’T DO IT EVERYBODY IS DOING THAT NO PLEASE NOT DIFF’RENT ENUFF!” The other, more-rational-and-less-all-caps-part calmly states, “Well, that’s because they are pretty fantastic. Simple, yet still you’re still able to personalize them. They’re just adorable.” Then the neurotic-and-self-conscious-part chatters, “Um, yeah, so do you really want to be associated with something so… round on your wedding day? I mean, you aren’t very dainty, and do you want to draw attention to the big round head you have?” Thanks, me.

Then, I stumbled upon these animal-people hybrid cake toppers. I also do not use the word hybrid lightly in this case.

special

These are just totally out there. I’m usually a huge proponent of stuff that’s way, way, waaay out there. While these certainly are… different and special, I’m not sure if we’re the right couple to pull of these toppers. I don’t want to possibly creep out the guests. They also might border a little on the furry side of things, and we don’t swing that way. Call me old fashioned…

*Le sigh*

Maybe we just have MerMice for spirit animals.

maybewearemice

*Found long ago on Google, and the seller “Dorian” has since dropped off the face of the planet.

Anyway, so concludes the first leg of the search for our spirit animals. I think I should go chant now.

When approaching wedding toppers, did y’all search for your “spirit animal” as well and come up short? Or did you just pick one because it was super-adorable, and not tangle yourself up into crazy over-analyzing like I have?

P.S. What is YOUR spirit animal? What do you guys think my spirit animal is? :p

The hybrid one actually elicited an “EWWWW” reaction from me instantly.

My spirit animal is a deer. I think it’s a roe deer, but I don’t remember anymore and will have to look it up again. Seriously, I remember dreaming one time that I was in a really scary situation and then this deer showed up and I was like, it’s cool, that’s my guardian animal and it stopped being scary. No, I don’t normally put this much stock in my dreams, but that one stuck. :)

We actually decided to skip the cake topper (there will be a few flowers on top instead). It was just one of those things that I realized wouldn’t add much.

… and the Gators. ;) Or how about Mr. and Mrs. Bee (Georgia Tech)?

Oh yikes! I vote NO on the human-animal hybrids! My first thought when I saw them was, “oohh, creepy.” I love the alligators though!

I saw the weird animal human hybrids on etsy too and was like “how creeped out would everyone be, because I’m kind of compelled by the poodle heads.”

Poodle heads, awwww.

Not so sure about our spirit animals – but Cam’s a dragon and I’m a bunny. Those are our Chinese Zodiacs … though I’m pretty sure it would make funny funny cake toppers. The best part? I’m a fire bunny and he’s an earth dragon! Tehehe … maybe you and JP have better looking Chinese Zodiac animals!!

Yeah, it’s a general consensus that the hybrid ones are freaky-deaky. :p

@Marigold- I could see you as a deer, for some reason. Creepy sounding, yeah, but I see it.

@Mom- Love you, but no.

@Carrie- Maybe we could turn the alligators into dinosaurs? lol

@diorable- I have a black standard poodle right next to me that I would like to turn into a cake topper or glue if she doesn’t stop bugging me. :p

@Alisha- I just went and checked. His is awesome. He’s a Fire Tiger. Mine? A Wood Rat. Not quite sexypants. :p

I asked D about this after reading your post, and he said his would have to be a lion. After I finished laughing at him (he is SO not a lion), I yelled at him for trying to eat me.

FH and I are penguins. Or polar bears. Or simply bears. Occasionally lions. But mainly penguins. Oh, and sometimes we’re pumpkins. We morph :)

But seriously, we’re pretty much penguins. The whole mate-for-life thing (and The Pebble and The Penguin was one of my all time favourite movies as a kid). I totally looked for penguin cake toppers as well and loved them all so much I made FH choose. He chose UNnaked peggies from goosegrease! But I’m so happy we made the choice, they are pretty unique, and yes everyone is doing them but nobody here is doing them that we know so that works fine for us.

LaurenDecember 10, 2009 - 12:14 am

@Marigold- Lol! That’s like a giant-scale cat-and-mouse.

@cue- So fancy that you guys are morphers. Mainly p-related morphers I see! lol. Penguins are a pretty freaking cute choice. I also agree about the gg toppers– it’s the whole wedding-world-pressure-cooker phenomenon. Just cause you see it everywhere, doesn’t mean that in-real-life-non-wedding-peeps see it everywhere. :)

Whatever we actually do, I’m sure I’ll make them, because, well, I feel guilty if I don’t make the art-project-related things. :p

Haven’t even started thinking about cake toppers yet :-/ But if you want to go with animals check out the late 90′s book “The Animal in You”
http://www.amazon.com/Animal-You-Discover-Secrets-Personality/dp/0312180403/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1260453783&sr=8-1
It was one of those personality quiz books that matchs you to you best animal counterpart :)

AlishaDecember 10, 2009 - 12:17 pm

hrm … a wood rat wouldn’t make a very good topper at all … but the fire tiger … pretty cool!

Cake toppers are hard to choose, yo. I finally found the perfect one for us – but I know what you mean about the art-project-related-guilt. Sometimes – you just want to buy it!

YoMotherDecember 11, 2009 - 4:50 pm

I think that it would be more artistic for you to have the totally stark and glittery cake that you suggested earlier. Remember that I am not totally ignorant regarding art — I do have a minor in art history from Tulane University where my advisor was the famous Jessie Poesch — just Google her). If you want more bling, I’d suggest staying in theme with two fondant cranes, one in hot pink and one in aqua. That being said, you don’t need the stress of doing that. Use the well-known motto “KISS” (Keep It Simple Stupid). Not meaning to be a disparaging remark to you — it’s just that why complicate things when you can simplify and just relax and enjoy it?

Love,
Mom

I think you should be dinosaurs!
These ( http://23.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kt2gq8cKGv1qza08ro1_400.jpg ) are a little scary, but I’m thinking cute ones..kind of like the gator toppers you showed.

My fiance and I are getting married next year (August 13, 2011) and we have been trying to find a dog marrying a cat wedding topper. I was wondering if you knew where they could be found? We can’t find them anywhere!

I love the wedding topper where the human faces are that of animals. We aren’t into the whole furry thing, but Leon’s animal spirit is a dog and mine seems to be a cat as the follow me. So we figured having a dog marrying a cat as a wedding topper would be symbolic of us.

Thanks!

Ami
