Veil veil veil veil veil!

I’ve known since the very beginning what I want in a veil. I knew what I wanted for a veil before I even had any CLUE about what I was doing for a dress!

For my ultimate veil-inspiration, keep reading after the jump! If you are my lovely and handsome fiancé, you can’t keep reading after the jump. This’ll have to be a surprise.

Ok, he’s gone!

This, this, this lovely image from Our Labor of Love contains my idea of the ultimate veil.

our+labor+of+loveLong, plain, swishy, and magical. I don’t know what came first, the want of a long veil or this photo, but it doesn’t matter. I still get butterflies in my throat just looking at it. I want THAT. That right there. I want to get a metallic sharpie and draw hearts all over the picture. “I <3 veil.” “LRR + VEIL = BFFs 4 LYFE.”

Ok, point made. So, here’s my deal. A few weeks ago, after I went dress shopping with Kristen, we went to visit my dress at the bridal salon. For those of you that haven’t seen my dress, here it be.

maribelAfter visiting my dress, we went into the veil room to play around. I found a few long veils, and they were fairly plain, but there really wasn’t much to them. A few hundred dollars for tulle attached to a hair comb? It seems ridiculous. It may seem cheap (or ignorant) for me to say that, but it just doesn’t make any sense. I thought, “Oh! I can probably make that!” (This is coming from a girl who was told by a teacher in the 4th grade never to pick up a needle and thread again. I obeyed).

I mentioned my hair-brained idea to a few people, all of whom gave me the shifty-eyed “Yeeeeaaahhhhmmm…” face/noise. I began to lose hope in being able to DIY this long, plain, magical veil.

Today, my hope for a DIY veil was restored! While looking through my Google Reader for “long veil,” I found a post by Heather of we met in a bar. She was a DIY veil bride!

Picture 29Her mother made hers for $40, complete with a blusher! I’m back in the game! Now I just need to get a bolt of tulle, a hair comby thing, and then puppy-dog-eye a friend or family member with a sewing machine. Good plan.

Did you have some crazy-clear ideas about certain aspects of your wedding that you were determined to DIY? Anybody else a DIY veil-er with delicious tips for me? Is this an awesome idea or a pretty bad idea?

I totally want to make my veil, although I’ll probably have something a little shorter.

BTW, your dress is totally drool-worthy. I loved it when I saw it too!

Love the idea of making your own veil. I made one for Halloween and it was super easy so I’m thinking it can’t be too much more difficult to make a nicer one for a real wedding! Great call!

I’ll be DIYing my veil too! Well, maybe with a little help from my mom. I can’t believe how much bridal salons try to sell them for!

I love the dress too. :p

I’m glad that DIYing the veil is not such a crazy idea. After I wrote this post, my matron of honor told me that she’s DIYing her veil too!

Lauren, my veil was a long, simple, tulle veil with a blusher…all attached to a round, open pill-box Alencon lace cap with clear combs along the inside. Very simple, yet elegant. You could do this with fabric that matches your dress, too. It’s a very small cap that sits on the crown of your head with all that luscious tulle flowing down. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it will be beautiful.
